I've always been so inspired by this bathroom. The serene and classic beadboard backdrop, the fun punchy colrs and of course, that adorable little girl. I thought I'd give recreating it a whirl. You'll have to provide your own adorable child though :)

Towel Rack - A vintage quilt rack is reinvented with a coat of pretty blue paint and given new life as a towel rack. Why not right? If you prefer the look of the spindle-y one in the inspiration image, try searching eBay!

Shower Curtain Fabric - If you can sew a straight line, you can sew a custom shower curtain. Shower curtains are 72" wide so match the patterns up on 2 lengths of fabric and finish the hems with some Stitch Witchery. Use a grommet kit to punch the holes for the shower rings (use an old shower curtain as a guide). Seriously, couldn't be easier! Maybe I need to do a DIY shower curtain tutorial to convince you...

Beadboard Wall Panels - I love the all the way to the ceiling look in this bathroom but even just taking it up to a plate rail height would be fantastic. Such a classic look!

Vanity Mirror - Don't be distracted by that tragic gold crackle finish! A few coats of that fun, punchy coral color and this mirror is well on it's way to being fabulous.

Wastebasket - $8.00 at Target and just waiting to be transformed.

Letter Stencil - Keep it classic with the Caslon font.

Pedestal Sink - I think the room really works because the traditional lines of the pedestal sink provide a great foil to the fancy, Rococo style mirror above it. Total opposites yet so at home together.

Remember that blue tufted Chippendale beauty I spotted on Craig's List and asked you all to weigh in on last week? Well I went to see it this weekend and it is indeed awesome. The blue is so pretty and the legs would look great in a different colored as you all suggested.

There's just one small problem (or rather a few dozen of the same problem!) The poor thing has been attacked by cats! Look at the edge of the seat right at the middle.

And even worse on the arm :(

I don't know why I'm so bothered by this. I mean I really, REALLY don't need another couch. But I'd already started to plan all sorts of fabulous lounging activities on this couch y'know? Trying to tell myself that it's for the best...

Caveat Emptor Teva Living

Back in November, I shared with you my discovery of Teva Living - an online retailer with a truly amazing collection of Restoration Hardware lookalike pieces at much more affordable prices.

Since publishing, that post has received a steady stream of comments from Teva Living customers who are having a terrible time getting their orders fulfilled and reporting generally bad customer service. Many have been waiting months (yes, months!) for their orders to arrive and seem so dismayed by the situation, they aren't confident they will ever receive their merchandise. I decided to do this follow-up post to alert anyone who had learned of Teva Living from Honey + Fitz and hadn't been back to that original post and seen those comments.

Like all the resources and product highlights I do on this blog, unless I state otherwise (and I will always do so), the opinions I'm sharing are my own and I am not paid to endorse any retailer or product. I don't claim to know what's going on with this retailer, nor have I done my own independent research into this issue. I'm just happy that my post has become a place for disappointed customers to connect with one another and hopefully find resolution.

Sadly, maybe those prices were too good to be true after all...

Reader Question: Can I Mix Trim Colors?

It's time for another reader question! Today I'm tackling Erin's question about trim colors. She and her boyfriend are in the process of buying a home (yay!) and her future abode is sporting lots and lots of not-so-chic oak trim. Here's the picture of her space and her dilemma:

All the trim in this house is oak. I want to update it and paint it white but I also love the look of black trim, especially on windows and doors. We have sliding French doors on the back of the house that I really want black. But I want the rest of the trim to be white. Would it look okay to mix and match the two???

Mixing trim colors can be tricky. Similar to open floor plan homes, it can be difficult to know where to end one color and start another. But that shouldn't stop you from experimenting with trim colors in self contained rooms especially if you've got some really fabulous trim that could use highlighting.

As far as I'm concerned, Erin's situation is very clear cut - paint all that trim white and paint the doors BUT NOT THE CASINGS black. The casing is what actually meets up with the trim so by leaving them white you create a seamless look with the rest of the white trim but still get the drama and impact of a gorgeous black door.

It can look REALLY amazing, especially when there are hints of black throughout the room. See...

It also doesn't have to be black. Here the windows and doors are a pretty gray while the rest of the trim and casings are white.

Here's the opposite effect - painting all the trim AND casings black. I'm not as big a fan of this look. Bold, yes...but it feels like someone went over the windows with a big, fat Sharpie or something.

This same thing can apply to windows - white trim, white casings, black window.

Some simple Photoshop work gives you an idea of what Erin's back wall will look like with white trim and black doors.

So Erin I say paint away! Those French doors are so fabulous, they will totally transform the space once they're black and immediately draw your eye outside.

Crown Molding as High Heel Storage

Shoe storage is one of those things that most women I know struggle with. You love them. They're pretty. They make you happy. Yet all too often they end up stuffed into shoe bins or piled up in the closet.

If getting your heel collection under control is on your list of things to tackle this year, consider the simple and inexpensive option of hanging them on pieces of crown molding. Let the molding blend in by painting it the same color as your wall OR really embrace the "shoes as art" mantra and paint it a fun, contrasting color.

Bonus: Each row of molding/shoes only takes up about 12" so depending on your wall space you have room for lots and lots of heels (read: some shoe shopping might be in order. I know...it's terrible.)

Short on wall space? You could even mount a few strips on the back of a door. So much nicer than those over the door shoe racks don't you think?

DIY Contact Paper Cityscape Photo Backdrop

As promised, today I'm sharing a few more photos of the contact paper cityscape I created as a photo backdrop for Knox's super hero 1st birthday party. I have to say a big THANK YOU to my brother and his girlfriend Maggie who were my partners in crime & cutting on this project.

This really couldn't be a simpler project. I can't even call this a tutorial! You only need 3 things - black contact paper, yellow contact paper and a pair of scissors. That's it!

(p.s. Now you guys know why I had so much leftover contact paper for my Halloween decorations this year!)

Because I wanted the babies to sit in front of this scene, I decided to do one full length of just solid black contact paper across the bottom. This allowed me to raise up the entire city scene so it would be visible above their heads.

The rest of this project is really just an exercise in cutting shapes and piecing them together into building-like silhouettes. There's really no right or wrong way to do this. Rectangles, round top buildings, small buildings, tall buildings...they all have a spot in your city!

Here are a few tips I can offer:

--Lay the Foundation: Working across your cityscape, start by add in rectangles of various sizes at (somewhat) regular intervals.

--Add Depth: Now go back and pepper in another layer of buildings by overlapping some rectangles in front of your first layer. Here you're trying to create the illusion of a background and foreground.

--Add Details: Not every building on the skyline is flat topped so add in a few antennas, domes, etc.

--Light It Up!: Use your yellow contact paper to add windows to your buildings. Vary the shapes so you have different window styles on your buildings. You can get really fancy with it and create mock architecture to your buildings like Maggie did with those columns on that one building. I was just doing little square windows and she had to get all fancy with it. She's awesome like that.

--...But Leave Some Dark: Don't try to fill the entire building's silhouette with lit up windows. Not every light has to be on!

--Add Personality!: Don't be afraid to add in some personal touches or features to make your city unique and personal. As we worked on this cityscape, it continually looked more and more like the Boston skyline. See the Prudential building there all the way on the left? And clearly that's the Zakim Bridge right? The finishing touch was my brother's addition of the super hero light signal complete with a K for Knox!

Not bad for under $20 right? I thought it was a great addition to Knox's super hero party, especially since most of his guests were pint-sizes babies who fit in perfectly with the cityscape scale!

Of course as with all my contact paper projects, the best part of this party feature was that it was 100% disposable. After the party, I peeled the whole thing off and had my kitchen back to normal in under 3 minutes. Can't beat that right?

Super Knox's 1st Birthday!

Before Knox turns 2 (he was 15 months last week!), I think I should finally get around to sharing photos of his first birthday party hosted back in October. I settled on a super hero theme after looking in Knox's closet one day and realizing he had quite the assortment of super hero shirts.

I designed two main elements that showed up throughout the party's paper goods and decor. The little spikey haired silhouette was inspired by Knox himself who always seems to be sporting some crazy, unruly hair.

I loved this Anders Ruff invitation but I really wanted to get his photo on their so I designed my own and reworked things a bit to make it work. I love the way they turned out!

I made him that little onsie using some simple iron-on transfer paper. See the spikey hair?!

All the envelopes were addressed using this fun address label I created. I printed them onto full label sheets and cut them out by hand. The stamp I made on Zazzle. I love Zazzle but boy, they are super strict about what can and can't be used on their creations. I first tried to use the custom K super hero emblem and they rejected it because it was too close to the Super Man symbol. Then I tried the little super hero silhouette and that too got rejected!

I made these comic book-inspired talk bubble stickers for the return address and printed them onto the same full label sheets.

Gift bags for all of Knox's super sidekicks!

They held individual super hero shirts for all the babies from Spoil Me Rotten Gifts.

And of course, super birthday boy got a cape!

Like most new moms, I had hundreds of photos on my iPhone that I'd taken of Knox throughout his first year but I hadn't ever taken the time to print any. Don't you hate that? All these images but they're almost trapped on our digital devices! I decided to print every single one and use them as simple but meaningful decor. It was so fun to relive all those special moments as we put up this little montage.

I love the way the little super hero looked in fondant! It's so fun to see something you've designed digitally actually come to life.

Remember Knox's first year collage? I had it printed and displayed it on an easel at the party. I printed it as an 8"x10" for the grandparents too and they LOVED it.

I created a little Gotham-esque city scape on the side of our kitchen island using my trusty contact paper. It made for a really cute backdrop for photos. I'll post more pics of this project in progress tomorrow. It was super simple.

The first year of a child's life is so special and we had a wonderful time celebrating this big milestone with our friends and family. It might sound crazy but as a first time mom, I felt a major sense of accomplishment for getting to the one year mark (yay, he's alive and thriving!) Art for Boys! Trains

Today I am FINALLY launching my fourth installment in my Art for Boys series over on Etsy - TRAINS!! I feel like I've been working on these forever (6 months to be exact!) but I'm really happy with how they turned out. As with all my art, my goal is to create something that both kids AND parents will like.

There are 11 different illustrations in the series all inspired by vintage trains. They are sized to fit into a standard 8"x10" frame. I love the way they look paired with a very modern and clean frame like the IKEA Ribba. Each train is available for individual purchase for $11 or in a set of 3, 4, 6 or 8.

I know lots of little boys who are totally crazy for trains so I hope these will bring just the right finishing touch to their rooms!

A Cozy & Wintery Nursery

It feels like forever since the last time I did an inspiration board. We're finally getting a cold blast of air here in North Carolina and I'm immediately in full cozy winter mode. Yay for fuzzy socks and warm sweaters!

My northern roots have me screaming "MAINE!" when I look at this board but I think it would be perfect for a winter baby just about anywhere. I love that it feels really organic and natural but still has a lot of texture and warmth. Isn't that cable knit chair slip cover INSANE?!? I just want to get all snuggly with tiny baby on it. And you can pull it right off to wash if it gets dirty (which it will!)

By popular request, I'll be including paint color suggestions whenever I post an inspiration board. I think a warm, gray tone would be perfect for cozy-ing up this room even more.

Coral and Aqua Real Nursery

I have been totally smitten with the coral and aqua color palette since I posted this little girl's bedroom inspiration board. I thought I was sort of over it but then I spotted this over-the-top adorable nursery and nope...not over it.

This talented mom mixed vintage Etsy finds, DIY elbow grease and some of my very favorite retailers to complete the dreamiest little girl's nursery. Those (painted) Target mirrors on the stenciled wall are perfection. A collection of ornate frames are unified with a coat of coral paint to create an interesting gallery wall (tip: search "ornate frames" on Etsy and scour flea markets for these.) And I love that she used multiple shades of coral throughout the room too. It keeps things from looking flat. I've included a little "get the look" guide in case you happen to be as in love with this room as I am.

Spoonflower Designer Fabric Knockoffs

Do you ever fall in love with a fabric only to find out that it's "to the trade" only? Or worse, that it's $90+ a yard? Happens to me ALL THE TIME! And while I'm a strong believer in the quality of those more expensive fabrics (they just feel amazing!), I can't afford them for much more than a prized throw pillow!

You all know I'm a huge fan of Spoonflower and regularly spotlight some of my favorite designers. Recently I've noticed some amazing designer-inspired designs on there. So if you're in love with a certain "look" but can't afford the 6 yards or so you need to recover that fabulous arm chair you scored on Craig's List, spend some time on Spoonflower! At $32/yard for their upholstery weight fabrics, it's a substantial savings over most designer fabrics.

Pipe Decor Round-up

I've been seeing so many creative uses for galvanized pipe lately. Lots of resourceful people are creating totally custom creations with just a trip to the hardware store.

Lattice Moulding

What is it about home decor stuff that can leave an otherwise confident decision-maker second guessing herself? I'm always so impressed by people who can just do it, whether "it" is pick a daring but fabulous paint color or doing something so out there, the thought would literally never cross most people's minds.

Case in point - the dining room of former Domino market editor Kate Simpson that was featured in the premiere issue of Lonny Magazine. Would you EVER in a million years think of putting garden lattice on your walls? Yea...me neither. But really, its like an avant garde (and much cheaper!) version of wainscotting. And it adds SOOOO much architectural interest to an otherwise plain white wall.

If you can't imagine tackling a whole room like this, what about just experimenting in an entry way or hall? I love the tone-on-tone-look best to keep things from getting overly busy.

I find that when I do, those are always my favorite things in the room. I really sweated over whether to go with bright yellow curtains in our dressing room but I'm so glad I did!

Swing Arm Metal Sconces

I have been having a love affair with metal swing arm sconces since I blogged about the brass one in Amy Meier's office that was featured in BHG.

Since then I've amassed quite collection of images featuring these sconces. There's just something about the metal shade and that double articulation that I can't get enough of (see how they have 2 spots where they can bend?) They give just a hit of that industrial vibe to a space. I've decided they look good pretty much everywhere, in every style room and in every finish.

I'm guessing there is a 3rd sconce just out of this shot on the left. Because you can bend them in various ways and direct the light down, these are a great solution for a vanity area on a window wall like below. Don't need a lot of solid wall space to make it work, just a bit right by the ceiling.

Rejuvenation seems to have the best price going on this style of sconce. The Reed (pictured below and in the photo of the hair salon above) is $272 and comes in 13 different finishes. If you prefer not to mess with an electrician, the Wallace style is the same but a plug-in version!

$272 is by no means cheap for a sconce but it's such a bold silhouette and really adds a lot to a space. If you're going to put it somewhere where you'll be adjusting the light angle frequently, I think it's worth it to spring for good quality. Nothing worse than mounting something like this and then having the weight of the shade drag it out of shape!

Rock Paper Scissors Glider Transformation Tutorial

I'm on a mission to convince parents-to-be that they don't have to spend $800 on a glider at a baby store just to have a comfortable place to feed their babies.

There are other options! You can turn almost any upholstered chair into a glider using my tutorial here.

And now Rock Paper Scissors has this AWESOME tutorial on how to turn one of those old 90s style rocking chair gliders into something much more modern.

Those gliders turn up on my local Craig's List all the time for under $25 so between these 2 tutorials, everyone can have a comfortable and stylish spot for those late night feedings!

An Organized Breakfast Cabinet Station

The premiere issue of HGTV Magazine included a feature on designer Linda Woodrum's kitchen. Linda is the designer of all the HGTV Dream Homes. I love getting a sneak peak inside designers' homes and seeing how they live. Her style is very comfortable and approachable which I'm a big fan of.

How about this built in china cabinet huh? I love the X's in the doors. So cottage-y and perfect for the Hilton Head setting.

But my favorite part of her kitchen was the peak inside this one cabinet that she's dedicated to her "breakfast bar". Everything you need for breakfast in one, easy to reach spot. I love how simple this is, it just makes so much sense! Why not put everything you're going to use in one spot instead of running all over the kitchen?

Clearly this didn't happen by accident as she had the forethought to plan an electrical outlet in this cabinet for her toaster oven. Must remember this for future kitchens!!

Some other smart people who are making their mornings easier. Even without room for bowls and mugs it just makes sense to put the toaster near the coffee maker right?

No counter near your coffee maker? No problem! Check out this fantastic idea! A pull-out (but more importantly tuck-away) surface to prep on. LOVE THIS!

Overkill? Um...perhaps a tad. This is like having a Starbucks in your kitchen! But I guess if you're Martha you can do that sort of thing.

Some simple shelves and pretty glass jars with cereal = instant cereal bar.

Same idea, but kid appropriate! This would be great in an island cabinet so little ones could help themselves...err...or maybe not?

The idea of organizing by purpose makes so much sense, I don't know why I never thought to apply it to breakfast. I'm already doing it with my baking in the pantry.

And everyone does it with diaper changing supplies on their changing table.

So why not breakfast right? Right now my espresso machine and my toaster are at opposite ends of the kitchen.

I promise you I WILL eventually stop posting about rugs. But I had to share just one more! I had to squelch an excited shriek when I saw this one. Oh so similar to the IKEA Stockholm Rand (which I still love) but updated in navy!

Homespun Blocks Navy Rug from Rugs USA

I have been loving the offset, bold stripes of the IKEA Stockholm Rand for almost two years now. And never, in those two years have I ever actually found the rug at an Ikea. It's mythical I tell you. It's perpetually sold out, no doubt because of the resemblance to the Madeline Weinrib Black & White Buche rug and it's "go with everything" look.

2011 Highlights and Happenings

As 2011 draws to a close, I wanted to spend some time reflecting back on the year. This is my first year in this new life of stay-at-home-mommyhood and my first year where I've had the luxury of posting here on Honey + Fitz (pretty much) every day. I've loved sharing my little corner of the world with you and am humbled by what this creative outlet has become for me.

Here, in no particular order is my best of 2011. The projects I happily checked off my list, the posts I most enjoyed chatting with you about and some plain old awesome moments.

Host an EASY New Year's Day Brunch

I hope Santa was good to you and that you're all recovering nicely from the craziness that the holidays bring! I've been enjoying a quiet week away from the blog and reflecting back on how wonderful 2011 has been for me and my family.

Do you guys have plans for New Year's? In years past we have hosted small dinner parties at our home but I'm really loving the idea of a low stress New Year's Day brunch this year instead. Just some yummy treats and of course CHAMPAGNE!

Here are some thoughts on how to pull it off. The key - make EVERYTHING ahead!

DRINKS:
Champagne of course! The only thing better than a regular mimosa in my book is a blood orange mimosa (with campari...mmm!!) Get the recipe here.

FOOD:
If ever there was a time to embrace make-ahead meals, a New Year's Day brunch would be it! Here are some of my favorite breakfast-y items that can be prepared in advance.

(assemble everything than pop it in the oven)

(no dough making, you use frozen dinner roles...brilliant!)

(I love these because you can make several batches by the dozen and vary the ingredients. They're perfect for little hands!)

(I like to serve these in high ball glasses. Fill the glass 1/4 of the way with maple syrup and add 3-4 french toast sticks. Viola! The perfect carry-around snack!)

DECOR:
Embrace the bubbly-ness! Blow up a few balloons in assorted sizes and tape them to the wall. I love how low cost and festive this is.

Holiday Cheer Around the House

Before I sign off for the holidays, I wanted to share with you one last look at our holiday decor in these parts. Here's my how (mostly) toddler-proofed tree turned out. I'm really happy with it, I must say!

I made some larger polar bears to keep the smaller guys company. The technique was exactly the same. See how I made them here. See how I made the glittered paper garland here.

Sadly, the emperor penguins that I wanted to add to the tree just never got done. Gotta know when to say when sometimes with these holiday crafts! Oh well, they'll look great on some craft paper wrapped gifts next year.

Remember the snowflakes I hung for the Polar Express party?

The found a new home on our tree after the party and were perfect with the winter creatures.

The mantle was pretty low key this year. I re-purposed the glittered letter garland I made here, added some evergreen clippings and and a wreath.

And of course, it wouldn't be Christmas without nutcrackers. In our house that means very specific, rival nutcrackers.

My little vintage wire tree moved down from the guest room this year and brought holiday cheer to our kitchen island.

Remember the felt flower tree skirt I made last year for it? Yup, it's still around!

Love these little cardinal jingle bells!

The chalkboard in our kitchen gets in on the holiday cheer with one simple, but joyous Christmas carol lyric.

I always jazz up the front door wreath with my vintage brass jingle bells that I got at the Raleigh Flea Market a few years ago.

And Knox's nursery gets a sweet dose of Christmas spirit with his Little People nativity scene.

Speaking of "little people", here's my little man enjoying his favorite Christmas book, A Charlie Brown Christmas (with music!)

I think it goes without saying at this point that Sarah Richardson is my design crush. I pretty much stalk everything she does. So I was really excited to see this feature on her holiday house in Canadian House & Home. I remember seeing this house redone in her Sarah's House series and it was definitely one of my favorites. In true Sarah style, the holiday decor is traditional and tasteful but still feels fun and young.

Polar Express Hot Chocolate Recipe (aka the BEST hot chocolate you've ever tasted)

Earlier today I shared all the details behind a cute little Polar Express themed breakfast party I had for some mom friends of mine and their babies. The star of the party (besides the adorable kids running around in their pjs) was this insanely decadent hot chocolate. I'm sharing the recipe so that you too may ingest approximately 1 billion calories in one yummy mug.

Polar Express Hot Chocolate (aka the BEST hot chocolate you've ever tasted) Recipe:

--1.5 cups of heavy cream

--1 can of sweetened condensed milk (14 oz)

--2 cups of bittersweet chocolate chips

--6 cups of milk

--1 tsp vanilla extract

In a large pot over low heat, combine all of the above ingredients. Stir regularly for 30-40 minutes until chocolate is fully melted and incorporated with other ingredients.

If you're making this for a party, you could add all of the above ingredients to a crockpot a few hours before guests arrive. Provide a ladle and mugs and let them serve themselves.

I choose to transfer my hot chocolate and coffee into these thermal carafes instead. They kept everything piping hot and were a little neater.

And of course, a thick, homemade marshmallow is the perfect topper to this decadent drink.

This is definitely not the kind of thing you'll have every day but one cup of hot cocoa on a cold winter day is pretty close to heaven in my book.

Polar Express Party, Recipes & Free Printables

I hosted a little Polar Express inspired breakfast party yesterday for some moms & babies. I had so much fun putting it all together that I thought I'd share some pictures (and printables) with you. The Polar Express is one of my favorite Christmas books so I took my queue for food and decor right from the story.

Mornings are crazy around here so I knew the only way I'd be able to pull off a morning get together was by selecting only food and decor that I could do in advance. The last thing you want to be doing at 8 am is feeding a toddler AND hanging snowflakes! SOOO not happening. I was able to do everything here the day before so I could just relax and brew the coffee the morning of.

{DECOR}
I threaded some snowflakes from Michael's ($1.99 for a pack of 12!) onto fishing line and suspended them over our kitchen island where all the food was set up. Ta-da! Snowy decor!

Knox's silver train coin bank was the perfect small reference to the Polar Express theme. I set it on one of my cake pedestals with some evergreen trimmings from our tree underneath. The snowflakes are just printer paper that I punched my snowflake punch.

I am a tad obsessed with my glass pedestal cloches from Sur la Table and am always looking for a way to use them. They look great filled with random ornaments at Christmas time.

{FOOD}

I had coffee with caramel sugar swizzle sticks and a yummy spinach, bacon and Swiss cheese quiche.

In the book The Polar Express, the little boy describes how all the children on the train are enjoying nougat candies and "hot cocoa as thick and rich as melted chocolate." I knew only the mommies would be enjoying the cocoa so super rich was just fine and I have the most incredible recipe for hot cocoa. One cup will satisfy your sweet tooth for days, I swear! I posted the recipe for the hot chocolate here.

But what's hot cocoa without marshmallows? I've always wanted to try making marshmallows and I figured this was the perfect occasion. It's a little intimidating because of the exacting nature of the boiled sugar part but it came together so easily and the result was AMAZING. I'm never eating store bought marshmallows ever again! All the recipes for these items are listed at the end of this post.

The jingle bell is the star of The Polar Express story. Luckily it's something even a small child can enjoy. Plus don't you love the sweet sound of jingle bells this time of year? I threaded some jumbo sized bells onto white ribbon and sent all the babies home with one.

Moms got a coconut cupcake iced with cream cheese frosting with a dusting of "snowy" coconut on top. I finished each cupcake with the MOST ADORABLE sugar jingle bell from Parker's Flour Patch. Each cupcake went into a cellophane bag with a cupcake insert that I got from Garnish. I tied them off with a cute tag (see printables) and a small jingle bell. Sadly I forgot to snap a picture of this adorable little package before my friends left with them! But either way it was a really fun, low stress get together. Babies were running around in their pjs while moms enjoyed some yummy treats and celebrated the season. What could be better?!

International Year of Chemistry Posters

Did you know that 2011 is was the International Year of Chemistry? Clearly I am a year late to this discovery! The posters to commemorate the year were created by designer Simon C. Page.

The year 2011 coincided with the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize awarded to Marie Curie. Madame Curie was the first person honored with two Nobel Prizes (in physics and chemistry) and the first female professor at the University of Paris - WOOT!

The 10 posters are so modern and eye catching, I can totally see them gracing a budding little scientist's bedroom walls. And at just $20 for a 12"x18", they won't break the bank. Aren't they just the perfect addition to my science-inspired inspiration board here?

In 2009 Page designed the poster series for the International Year of Astronomy and they are equally striking. See those designs here. Prices for 12"x18"s in that series are now $40 a piece.

My Christmas List 2011

I feel like the idea of making a Christmas list as an adult is a little ridiculous so this post is more or less in jest. I say "more or less" because I wouldn't be upset if some of these things actually showed up under the tree Christmas morning. You might recognize a few of the items from past posts I've done here on the blog. That's sort of the blessing and the curse of a blog...you're always finding fabulous things to add to your "list!"

After I put this list together I found it interesting that it really covers all aspects things I love - design, DIY, baking, technology and fashion (which as a stay-at-home mom translates directly into comfortable, cute and easy!)

What are you secretly (or maybe not so secretly?) hoping to find under your tree this year?

1. Star Chart Print - This has been at the very top of my list ever since I did this post and was turned on to Municipal Prints by a reader.

2. Write with Moxie Pencils - I love pencils. Is that weird? I want these in a pretty glass cup on my desk.

3. Trablit French Coffee Extract - Leave it to the French to make something like coffee extract so awesome that it ends up on a Christmas list! This is no normal extract. It has the deepest, most complex coffee flavor ever. Coffee is the key to making anything chocolate taste even more chocolatey and this extract is just what I need.

4. Kitchen Aid Beater Paddle - No more stopping mid-mixing to scrape down the bowl. I NEED THIS!

5. Les Petit Macarons - I am officially proclaiming 2012 as the year I perfect macaron baking. Every macaron aficionado I know swears by this book.

6. The Hunger Games Trilogy - Am I the last person on the planet that still needs to read this book? Minimum 3 people a week tell me how amazing it is.

7. iPhone Pocket Projector - Gadget-y and excessive? Most definitely. But as a devoted iPhone user, I am totally intrigued. And as a mom with gigabytes of baby-doing-cute-things video, I feel like I would really use it.

8. Bostitch Staple Gun - Can you believe I don't own a staple gun? That craziness needs to end.

9. HGTV Magazine Subscription - I completely enjoyed the premiere issue. Really fun tone and very practical ideas.

10. J.Crew High Waist Skinny Jeans - Let's be clear - these aren't high waist like 80's mom jeans high waist. But they are comfortable and natural waist which is perfect and a rare thing in the world of skinny jeans.

11. Hanes Cowl Neck Sweatshirt - I know, you're like "really Dina, a Hanes sweatshirt is on your Christmas list?" But this is cute AND comfortable and perfect to throw on when I need to run out the door with Knox.

12. J.Crew Cece Studded Suede Ballet Flats - Cute shoes can make even a Hanes sweatshirt look fashionable...or maybe that's just what I'm telling myself because I really want hot pink shoes. Either way, I love them.

J.Crew's Holiday Catalog throughout the years

I have done ZERO holiday shopping. Do you hear me?! ZERO!!! Christmas is in 11 days!!!! I've vowed to take all of today and put a major dent in my shopping list.

So while I'm off doing that, I'll share one of my very favorite holiday inspirations - the arrival of the J.Crew holiday catalog in my mailbox. The styling, the photography and the amazing settings are always so spot on. Oh yes, and the clothes aren't half bad either! Here is a look back at some of the holiday catalogs from recent years.

Lately, they have been loving the work of photographer Mei Tao. She's shot most of the Crewcuts catalogs of late and one of my favorite holiday catalog ever - the Chile location (upper left in the collage above).

Rhett Patrick's Nursery

Emily from the fantastic blog Savannah Redtop recently revealed her little man Rhett's nursery. I'm dying over how perfect it is for her little Southern gentleman. It's got a great mix of DIY and personal touches and the result is gorgeous and sophisticated yet still so baby appropriate.

The curtain panels are Restoration Hardware Baby that Emily customized with that fun border.

There are some really sweet masculine touches throughout the room like the dark wood, cowhide rug and leather mirror.. The crib was handmade by Emily's father-in-law out of Caribbean Rosewood (....whaaaat?!)

How gorgeous is that bedding? I love the pattern and the pretty blue against all that dark wood is fantastic.

But without a doubt my favorite part of this whole nursery is the thoughtfully selected, incredibly personal art touches. Like the lyrics from "Moon River" which Emily and her dad danced to at her wedding. Or the gorgeous illustration of how to tie a perfect bow tie (a must for even the tiniest of Southern gentlemen!), hand painted by Emily's mom.

Our 2011 Holiday Card

We got our family photos back from our holiday photo session with Rebecca of Millie Holloman Photography and love so many of the shots. We used the glittery "Merry Christmas" garland I made here in a few of the photos. This was one of my favorites.

Mr. H+F wasn't loving how the "E" and the "I" were a little twisted (perfectionist anyone?) so we considered some other options.

Love this one but I can just hear my mom complaining that me and Mr. H+F aren't in the photo.

Again, LOVE but sort of the same problem as above.

Ultimately we settled on this one! It's a great shot of our little family and perfectly captures this time in our lives with our little man. Thank you Rebecca for being awesome!

DIY Glittered Winter Wonderland Ornaments

Continuing on in my quest to create some low-cost DIY ornaments for our tree this year! Check out the super easy glitter dot garland I shared here.

Today I'm sharing some glittered wintery animals I created using super cheap ($0.29 a piece!) wooded cutouts. You can find a huge assortment of these at any craft store. I got mine at Michaels.

Before you get started glittering, you'll want to pierce your cutout so you have a spot to thread a hook or ribbon through for hanging your finished ornament. These wooden cutouts are super soft so even a push pin will pierce them.

Once you've got a hole, push a toothpick through. This will serve as handle for you as your work and will also give you something to lean the ornament for drying.

Spread a generous layer of glue all over (I used good old Elmer's).

Then sprinkle your glitter. I used Martha Stewart's tinsel glitter. I like that it's coarser than normal glitter and it adds more dimension to the animal...sort of like sparkly fur :)

You could definitely stop there but I went one step further and glittered the outline of the animal in a contrasting color. Let the main body dry, then dip a toothpick in some glue and apply it all around the edge.

Sprinkle your contrasting color glitter all around. Tap off any excess that falls on the main body of the ornament.

See, it adds just a little something extra! I love it.

After drying, I threaded some baker's twine on him and gave him a little home on our tree near my glitter garland.

But let's face it, a few glittery polar bears does not a winter wonderland of a tree make. So I made him some friends.

Some emperor penguins are in the works.

As are some extra large polar bears.

I'll post pictures of all the finished creatures later in the week. In the meantime, I've got a few other ornaments to work on to accompany these guys.

DIY Glitter Circle Garland

This is the first year we're setting up a Christmas tree with a very curious toddler in the house. Last year was technically Knox's first Christmas but he was too tiny to do much more than sit in my lap and stare at the pretty lights. This year is a whole other story. He is super curious and endlessly fascinated with anything I tell him not to touch. I debated setting up a table top tree out of his reach but decided instead that I'd rather get our normal 7' tree and just make some changes to the way I decorate it.

I seem to be the only person on the planet who hasn't yet made the transition to shatter-proof ornaments. All of my ornaments are glass and many I inherited from my grandmother. Heirloom ornaments + curious toddler = asking for trouble. So this year (and probably the next few years!) I'm leaving the glass ornaments in storage and trying instead to decorate the tree with no/low cost, largely disposable craft ornaments. Things I could make cheaply and easily and that I wouldn't care if they got pulled off the tree by curious little hands.

Over the next few days I'll be sharing some of these DIY crafted ornaments. First up - a pretty, and super easy glittery dot garland that I made after seeing this one.

I made a glittered "Merry Christmas" garland here for our family pictures but I didn't want to get into the whole glue, glitter sprinkling, cleaning glitter endlessly thing again so instead I used some 12x12 glittered scrapbooking paper that I had. You can find these in a bunch of colors in the scrapbooking section of Michael's and AC Moore.

I used my Fiskar's XL circle punch to punch out roughly 30 circles from each 12x12 sheet. I had roughly 90 dots total which made me about a 15' garland.

Squeezing out all those dots is the hardest part. Once you've got them, just sew them together!

It goes really fast! Just put each dot up against the last one and run a continuous stitch.

I was able to sew the entire garland this way in under 10 minutes.

I really love the way it looks on the tree, all nestled into the branches.

You could make this garland for $0 if you used paint chips in some cute colors instead of the glittered paper. I think that would be adorable for a party and you could customize the color palette however you wanted! Must remember that for future party decor.

Lacquered Boxes at The Container Store

A few weeks ago while visiting The Container Store I posted this photo on my Facebook wall. A rainbow of pretty, shiny lacquered boxes in a huge array of sizes. LOVE!

Well they've finally shown up on The Container Store website and I'm giddy. Eight colors to choose from in sizes ranging from mini to large and none of them cost more than $17.99. They even have a great round one that I love.

These are going on my Christmas list ASAP. I love them nestled on a bookshelf like this, holding all kinds of not-so-cute things.

Homemade Granola Gifts, Recipe & Printables

I love giving homemade food gifts but with everything else there is to do around the holidays, it can be hard to find the time! Today I'm sharing the recipe for one of my favorite make in bulk, yummy gifts - homemade granola. It comes together quickly and the recipients will appreciate the healthy breakfast (it's deliscious over yogurt!)

Plus it looks adorable all packaged up in some cellophane bags and tied with ribbon. You can download my free printable labels here or by clicking the image of the labels above.

Homemade Granola:

1/3 cup olive oil

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 cup light brown sugar

3/4 tsp cinnamon

1 tbsp vanilla extract

1/2 cup honey

1/2 cup sweetened coconut

3 cups oats

1 cup pecans

1 cup almonds

3/4 cup golden raisins

3/4 cup dried cranberries

--Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray (or line with parchment).
--In a bowl, combine olive oil, salt, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and honey. Mix in oats and nuts and stir until combined.
--Spread onto your baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes
--Remove from oven and spread coconut over oat & nut mixture, tossing lighting to combine
--Return to oven for an additional 15 minutes to roast coconut
--Remove from oven and spread raisins and cranberries over oat/nut/coconut mixture
--All to cool completely. Mixture will harden and solidify. Once completely cooled, use a spatula to lift granola from baking sheet and break apart. Store in airtight container.

I like this combination of pecans, almonds, dried cranberries and raisins in my granola but you can really add whatever nuts and berries you want. Just be sure to keep the proportions the same (3 cups of oats to 2 cups of nuts).

This recipe makes about 3 bags worth. You can double, triple, etc the recipe for larger quantities.

There's no price specified on the site Aileen provided so I'm not exactly sure how she's defining affordable.

This is a pretty distinctive Hollywood Regency/Milo Baughman style and I was intrigued to see if I could track down anything similar. Here's what I came up with.

Pretty great match minus the orientation of the legs. $895 is not exactly what I'd call "affordable" for a nightstand but maybe it's less than Aileen's designer crush?

I think this next find is a great match, particularly because Aileen isn't so concerned with matching the chrome legs. A few coats of high gloss white paint would really transform this piece and make it modern and sleek.

That was as close as I could get for Aileen. Anyone else come across anything similar?

DIY Glitter Letters Christmas Garland

We took our family photos for holiday cards this weekend. I totally used Lina's advice when picking out our outfits but I really wanted to do something a little different this year too.

I've had this photo pinned on my Holiday Decor board over on Pinterest since the summer. I have no idea where it was taken but it really reminds me of my old stomping grounds back in Boston. I love how simple and sweet it is and I love the banner.

Then I saw this tutorial for a glitter garland and my mind was made up. I must have a glittery Christmas message for our photo session!

{The Sweetest Occasion}

After picking a font, I printed up my message on cardstock. You can download my template here. (Yes the template has an extra R in "Merry"...consider it a gift, lol!}

Then it's really just a matter of cutting out your letters...

Spraying them with spray adhesive and sprinkling on some glitter.

I used Martha Stewart craft glitter in turquoise for this project. It's a great price, a little goes a long way and it's the sparkliest (is that a word?) glitter I've found.

Putting the garland together was really easy BUT don't do what I did and assemble your letters backwards. I made the mistake of laying them face down and then taping across the back (the tape just holds then in place while you're gluing).

Once I hot glued my string on and flipped it over, I had this...

...which would have worked great if we were being photographed in a mirror. Unfortunately that was not the case and I had to start over again.

The way to avoid this is to lay your tape sticky side up and place your letters down on top. Then when you flip them over to glue, you'll be sure they're all in the right spot.

Here's my finished banner! We used it for a few of our photos but I'm not sure if any of those will make the final cut. I'll post the pic we decide on though!

As much as I love unique art for a child's room, I like LOW COST, unique art even more! I shared my idea for framing cute wrapping paper here. Today I'm sharing another favorite trick for low cost and personalized art - framing pages from a favorite book.

Framed pages from classic Shel Silverstein poems via Amy Meier Design

Kid's books are so beautifully illustrated, they really are art unto themselves! I have a serious weakness for vintage children's books, especially foreign ones. These are some of my absolute favorites. Many are out of print but still available thru Etsy, eBay and through Amazon's used book service.

If you don't want to tear pages out of these beautiful books (I don't blame you!) have colored photocopies of your favorite pages printed on card-stock and frame that instead.

1. Miroslav Sasek "This Is New York": Truthfully I love all of Sasek's books. See his full collection here. If you can find one that's meaningful to your family, even better! The images are gorgeous and just begging to be framed.

2. Bruno Munari's ABC: First published in Italy in 1961, the striking imagery is just as gorgeous and relevant today.

3. Cuore di mamma: I actually have the original Portuguese version (pictured above) but it's been translated into many, many languages. The story is a simple one of a boy's love for his mother and the illustrations are bold and happy.

4. A child's picture Hebrew dictionary: The Hebrew alphabet depicted through all sorts of objects, animals and places.

5. When I Was Born: Another gorgeous piece of work from Isabel Minhós Martins. I love the bold colors and the story is so sweet it kills me.

6. Wild Animals by Rop Van Mierlo: I am more than a little obsessed with this book. Originally printed in the Netherlands, it features big ink drop paintings of various animals. Every page is gorgeous. See a quick video of the gorgeous pages here.

Wren Elizabeth's Nursery

I got the best post over on my Facebook wall this weekend. One of my reader's, Heather, posted a link to her sweet little girl's nursery inspired by Knox's nursery! How perfect is this?

I LOVE seeing how Heather reinterpreted the loose safari animal theme in Knox's nursery. The National Geographic issues as art is pretty much brilliant.

I am seriously flattered beyond words to know that beautiful baby Wren will be sleeping, growing and playing in a room inspired by our own nursery. Start a Tradition - Christmas Tree Trunk Trimmings

I hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving holiday! I was in Boston for 10 glorious days soaking in some much needed city and family time. Having grandparents around to help with Knox is such a luxury! I'm slowly getting back into the swing of things here at home...y'know laundry, groceries...really sexy stuff.

I had to share this adorable idea I came across in the latest issue of Better Homes & Garden. I LOVE easy, inexpensive ways to commemorate the holidays and I'm a sucker for collections. This idea is both wrapped into one!

Before you set up your tree, it's recommended that you give the trunk a fresh cut - about an inch trimmed off the bottom. Instead of discarding that 1" disk this year, take a Sharpie to it. The year, your initials...whatever you're in the mood for. Before long you'll have a charming finishing touch to your holiday mantel decor.

DIY Anthropologie Kites and Constellations Star Cardigan

It's no secret that I love Anthropologie. Just walking through one of their stores can put me in a good mood. I love all of their home decor stuff but I'm also a big fan of their clothing. I always find such great, unique pieces there.

But I am the first one to admit that sometimes their prices are more than I can stomach. Case in point - I was at the store last week and spotted this adorable Kites & Constellations Cardigan. After my recent obsession with vintage star charts, I couldn't believe my eyes! A star chart cardigan! It's totally adorable. What's not adorable though is the $118 price tag.

Let's dissect what this is shall we? We're talking about a navy blue cardigan with some white embroidered lines, stars and a few seed beads. I took one look at it and immediately thought, "I can definitely make that!"

So off I went! A navy blue cardigan, some white embroidery floss, clear seed beads and a print out of the original cardigan from the Anthropologie site are all you need for this project.

I started by laying my cardigan flat so I could see my entire "canvas".

Using narrow strips of painter's tape, I started to loosely sketch out the design for myself on the sweater. You really don't have to be exact here, you're just looking to create a general guide for yourself .

Keep moving your way around the sweater, using the original as your guide. Here's the back.

The most interesting thing about the original I think is how the design wraps around the shoulders and makes its way down the sleeves.

When you're done you'll have something like this!

At this point I tried the sweater on to make sure I liked the placement of where the design was wrapping and hitting my body. When you take it off, the painter's tape will have stretched with the sweater and possibly even torn. DON'T WORRY. Again, the tape is just meant as an imperfect guide. Smooth it back down and forge ahead! I promise it won't matter.

The lines on the design are nothing more than a simple straight (or running) stitch. We're talking 7th grade Home Ec class! Don't stress about being too perfect with your stitches. Chalk it up to the "handmade charm" that apparently warrants a $118 price tag!

Work in sections following your tape as you go. Don't worry about the stars for now, just focus on getting all the straight lines done.

When you're done with all the lines, go back and start filling in your stars. On the original there is a mix of circles, star shapes and fuller circles with beads in the center.

The empty little circles are just split stitches. Here is a great tutorial on split stitches.

The filled in dots (the 3rd dot from the bottom in the image above) are satin stitched dots. Here is a tutorial on satin stitched dots.

The stars are just a series of stitches across each other...make an X then make an X on top of the first X, etc.

The larger loop circles (2nd from the bottom above) are just a series of loops done around a central point. Here I am making one.

These "stars" get seed beads in the center. String up 2-4 beads and sew them into the center of your looped circle.

Keep going until you've created all the little "stars" you want. Here's my finished cardigan!

Not bad for $3 and two naps worth of embroidery huh?

Here's where things get a little ridiculous. This actually should have been a $0 project because I had all the supplies on hand that I needed. I have a big stash of embroidery floss but halfway through embroidering, I ran out and realized I didn't have any more white in my sewing supplies. Before I headed out to purchase more I double checked the color on the label just to make sure it wasn't "ecru" or some non-white version of white and guess white...what I thought was white was actually...

Yup...GLOW IN THE DARK! Why on Earth do I even own glow in the dark embroidery floss?!?!?! I had already finished too much of the sweater to turn back, so off I went to purchase more glow in the dark embroidery floss.

So now, when the lights are off, my chic Anthropologie knock-off looks like something I could have picked up in a planetarium gift shop. Sorry for the horrible picture but you get the drift!

I am equal parts mortified and amused. But not so mortified that I'm not totally going to rock this little cardigan (in the day time) all the time.

We're blowing town early to celebrate Thanksgiving with the family. Wishing you all a wonderful holiday full of football, pie and elastic waist pants!

Pewter and Sage Mood Board Monday Dining Room

Today I'm excited to be taking part in my second Mood Board Monday over on Pewter + Sage. If you're not familiar with the concept, Sarah provides one inspirational item or image and participants design a room - any room - around it. Click here to see the first Mood Board Monday I participated in (and the first inspiration board I ever did on the blog!)

Today's challenge starts with some fabulous dinnerware so clearly a warm and inviting dining room was in order!

Sarah gaves us a few choices but I picked the gorgeous Penumbral Doily Dinnerware from Anthropologie. I was so inspired by the contrast in these plates. They're an organic, imperfect terracotta form yet they're still so delicate with the impressed crocheted motif.   I decided to keep the play on contrasts going throughout the room with a casual yet refined dining room.

This is the first non-kiddy room I've designed here on the blog so be kind! Even though this is an inspiration board challenge and the sky is the limit on budgets, etc I tried really hard to only use items that I myself would have no issue buying. I love Restoration Hardware furniture and Anthropologie lighting and all of that but I specifically challenged myself to design a room for under $3,500 (that didn't look like it!) That's not chump change but if you've ever furnished and decorated a dining room you know it EATS money. There are so many major furniture pieces to purchase (especially chairs!!) but I did it!

I am not one for really fancy dining rooms with gobs of crystals and fancy, uncomfortable chairs. A room like this is much more my style - warm and inviting with a cozy, home-y feel.   I love the mix of woods and textures with just a hint of sparkle in the mercury glass lamps. I've swapped out two of the chairs (wishbone style knock offs from Overstock, WOOT!!) for a cushy and colorful armless settee. Instead of one big light, I've opted for two smaller iron orb pendants over a weathered harvest table. A soft tone-on-tone chevron jute rug adds texture and just a hint of pattern to the room. Some green cotton curtain panels would be fancied up with Greek key trim and the burlap lamp shades would get just at touch of rusty orange with some velvet ribbon trim.

Can you believe that sideboard is IKEA and just $199? I love the gray finish! I would add a single fun knob to bring out a little more of that rusty orange color from the settee. $10 is a splurge for a knob but you only need one on this piece!

And just in time for Thanksgiving, some adorable vintage brass wishbone charms are perfect for stringing up on twine and wrapping around napkins like this.

Picture Perfect Wardrobes for your Holiday Cards

I feel like I just took down this year's Halloween decorations and suddenly it's already time to start thinking about Christmas! Cookie baking, shopping and of course, holiday cards. Last year, Knox was just two months old at Christmas and he was front and center on our cards. This year we're doing a family pictures which is great...but I don't think a cute knit hat is going to cut it for Mr. H+F and I.

Last Year's Holiday Card

Well who knows better what looks good in pictures than someone who's in the business of making pretty pictures?! Today I'm super excited to welcome Raleigh photographer Lina Jarmond to the blog. If you're in the Raleigh area and considering maternity photos, newborn photos or photos of your adorable kids, Lina is your girl! She's here to help us all look our best in our holiday cards this year. Y'know...as in NOT like this.

It's a busy fall season for photographers, also known as "update your family portrait" time of the year. Everyone is excited about their upcoming family sessions. But then the dreaded question arises:

“What on earth are we going to wear?”

Flowing white shirts and khakis on the beach, navy polos and yet more khakis all around. We’ve all seen those photos. Heck, most of us have been in those photos! But did you know that coordinated and not “uniform” looks for families create a much more pleasing photograph?

Today, my goal is to show you how select and coordinate your wardrobe for fresh, classic, yet distinctly modern portraits that will tell the story of your family. The best part - it is not nearly as difficult as you think it is!

If all of your choices were somehow on one person, would the result be pleasing colorwise? Think coordinated, not monochromatic. An easy way to do this is to choose one patterned item (for example a print dress for your daughter or a skirt for mom) and then select the rest of the family’s clothing from colors within that pattern.

A tried and true formula for a boy/girl sibling duo includes a patterned dress or skirt for the girl, with the boy in a solid shirt. The color of that shirt would be pulled from the pattern of the little girls' dress. If the little girl is wearing a solid shirt with a patterned skirt, have the boy’s top match a different color in her skirt, so that their shirts don’t match precisely. Trust me, it works! While many parents have the urge to put their boys or girls in the exact same outfit, mixing it up a bit - while still creating a pleasing overall combination - creates a considerably more interesting color palette and image.

Layering simple pieces - long sleeve tees, a hooded knit sweater and jean jacket - gives your pictures depth and texture without overwhelming the image. Plus, you can take one piece off and have a whole different look! And don't forget about accessories. Hats, gloves, scarves, vests, fun necklaces and bracelets, funky boots, tights, umbrellas can really make a photograph more interesting and more YOU!

For your session, everyone should be in the same style - all dressy or all casual - but Mom should stand out! Dresses/skirts or fashionable jeans and yes...heels!

Now that you have some basic tips, how do you put it all together? A good place to start is by defining the style sensibility you want your session to reflect. Do you want to capture your typical style, or perhaps a more formal or casual or trendy version of that?

Here is a quick example - it all started with a plaid scarf. Dad and son has layers, while mom is sporting a stylish double buckle belt and booties. It can easily be swapped for deep brown colors as those are in the scarf as well.And since shoes are the most important accessory for a woman's outfit, little girl spiced up her outfit with orange-brown flats.

Reader Question: To Paint or Not to Paint (a brick fireplace & wood trim)

It's time for another reader question! Today I'm tackling Lisa's family room and the age old design question - to paint or not to paint. It's the cheapest, most transformative thing you can do to a room but sometimes painting things like brick and wood trim can leave us (and our spouses!) second guessing ourselves. Lisa has a few things she's considering changing about the space. Here's what she wrote:

With 2 young kids and a black lab, the carpet in this room needs to go. I would like to do hardwood, but as you can see in the photos, all of our woodwork is a honey colored oak. Do we take the plunge and pick a hardwood we like and paint the woodwork? Or work with the woodwork as is??

The fireplace is a floor to ceiling ugly dark red brick with even uglier gray grout. The mantel is a large piece of oak wood that I’m not sure we can remove due to the fact that it’s significant in size and seems to be permanently adhered to the brick. I have considered painting the brick (gasp), but I know how some people feel about painting brick.

Finally the elephant in the room.....those Amityville Horror/stop sign shaped windows. They really don’t bring in much light and we have french doors on an adjoining wall leading to the outside that I believe brings in an adequate amount of light. I have no idea why someone would install those in the first place and what to do with them now.

Phew, this is a doozy! But I do love a good challenge so let's take this one step at a time...

Flooring
Hardwood floors can be a considerable investment and it will completely transform the feel of this room. I would hate to see Lisa spend money on a wood floor selection she doesn't love just because it matches the existing honey colored trim that she ALSO doesn't love. So my verdict is paint out that oak trim and get busy picking out a floor you love. There are so many great engineered hardwoods now. I LOVE this handscraped wide plank style from Lumber Liquidators. How beautiful is this?

Fireplace
The idea of painting a brick fireplace can seem daunting but it's actually quite simple. The wonderful DIY duo of John and Sherry over at Young House Love have a great tutorial on how to tackle painting a brick fireplace (they've done it twice now!) A fresh coat of white will take that standard, boring (no offense Lisa!) fireplace to a whole new level. It will look bright and modern and clean and will really pop off the gorgeous new dark wood floors. Here are some of my favorite before and after painted fireplaces to inspire you.

After you paint out the brick, take a step back and assess whether you want to paint the mantel as well. I'm a fan of both looks - wood toned mantel on white brick or white mantel on white brick.

I think in the case of Lisa's room I would paint the mantel white and then distress the edges a bit. Just enough to make it look like it's an older piece of wood with some age and character. Then I'd find two vintage wood corbels from an architectural salvage yard and mount them under each side of the mantel. It's a low cost way to elevate the overall design of the mantel and make it look like the focal point it should be.

Windows

Now for my favorite part of Lisa's questions - the "Amityville Horror windows". What a great description Lisa! Yes, not every room is blessed with gorgeous architectural details and things like funny shaped windows can leave us scratching our heads.

Here is a rule of thumb:

Want to make an architectural feature stand out? Paint it a high contrast color.

Want to make an architectural feature less noticeable? Paint it the same color as the walls surrounding it.

Below I've photoshopped the trim around one of the window's in the same color as the wall. Now I am not claiming this will cause the windows to disappear altogether (sorry Lisa, only a sledgehammer will do that!) but it will cause them to recede visually and be less noticeable.

With this less desirable architecture "erased", why not take the opportunity to create some architectural interest you actually like? I love the idea of building some bookcases below the windows on either side of the fireplace like below (picture the windows in place of circular art).

We can all use more storage and I think the addition of these bookshelves really adds some presence to this family room wall.

Start with two of these IKEA Besta wall shelf units. Set them on a platform like in the above image for added height or add a toe kick around it for a totally built-in look.

Add four of these Besta Vara doors in white. The inspiration image has matte doors which the Vara are but I like these Tofta high gloss style doors even better...they're 5x the price though so maybe matte is just fine ;)

What really takes the buffet in the inspiration photo to a whole other level is the marble top. I don't know the price on what that would run but without it you're only up to $248.58 so you definitely have some wiggle room in there!

Isn't it amazing how something like really special hardware can make even an IKEA cabinet look expensive?

Finish off the entire vignette by leaning two of these IKEA Stave mirrors side by side on top of the buffet.

Vintage Star Charts

I have been furiously searching for a vintage star chart for months now. I think it's finally time I fill you all in on this obsession. I am in desperate need of my own little inky blue map of the heavens to frame and stare at.

This image of designer Thomas O'Brien's apartment in Elle Decor started the obsession. You can read more about his star chart here where he chronicles all the different spots he's hung it throughout the years.

He describes his star chart as a 1940s Rand McNally map originally created to teach school children about the stars and heavens. He scored his for $75 but anytime I've seen vintage charts of that size they've been several hundreds of dollars which just isn't working for me.

This one on Amazon is actually an educational tool for science teachers. It's 44" square which is awesome and only $13.20 which is double awesome! It's described as being "chalk writeable" which kind of confuses me but I'm really tempted to order it and see if it's frame worthy!

I really love this last options - a 36" square constellation scarf. I think this would look phenomenal framed. I realize it's not exactly like the vintage Rand McNally map Mr. O'Brien has but I almost like it better. The colors are so pretty.

Do you ever have that moment when looking at a great piece of abstract art when you think to yourself "hmmm...maybe I could do that." As someone who loves to DIY stuff and get my hands dirty, I have that moment a lot. But then I go home and things like laundry and what do for dinner get in the way and well...you know how that goes.

I've been really inspired lately by abstract black and white art. I love the big statement it makes and the modern flair it adds any space. I have completely convinced myself (am I delusional?) that I can DIY a passable substitute rather than shell out big bucks for one.

Hope you are all having a wonderful Halloween! It's rainy here which is really sad for the trick-or-treaters. It's also really sad for my thighs because guess who's going to be left eating all that Halloween candy? Yup...this girl.

Knox had a little Halloween party this afternoon for all his friends. Here's my lobster ready to greet all his tiny monster buddies! I kept the menu simple and yummy, with tiny portions perfect for mommies and babies alike. All the recipes are at the end of the post.

Nutter butter mummies. So simple and adorable.

Pumpkin bisque shots. Yummy and the babies loved them.

Pumpkin mousse parfaits in mommy and baby sizes!

Blood orange soda...get it? :)

Nutter Butter Mummies Recipe:

Melt a package of chocolate chips according to package directions. Dip Nutter Butter cookies into chocolate. Lay flat on wax paper to dry. Melt a package of vanilla almond bark according to package directions. Transfer to Zip Lock bag and snip the corner. Lay chocolate covered Nutter Butters on wax paper. Drizzle vanilla back and forth over cookie to make mummy bandages. Remember, its good to see some of the cookie still. Place 2 drops of vanilla chocolate for mummy eyes.

Pumpkin Soup Recipe: I used this one but substituted evaporated skim milk for the cream. It's still really rich so I prefer small portions. Tiny espresso cups are the perfect serving. You can garnish each shot with a dollop of sour cream.

I started Honey + Fitz as a way to chronicle home projects and share my adventures in pregnancy with far away family and friends. I can still remember the first time I got a comment from someone I didn't know...the realization that other people were actually READING my random thoughts was exciting (and terrifying!) With so many blogs and a virtually endless supply of inspiration out there, the fact that you choose to take even a few minutes of your busy day to come here is flattering.

Furbish Inspired Wall Treatment

Remember this photo that I posted earlier this week of the new Furbish Studio? Free hand black circles on a white wall - so brilliant in its simplicity. Makes you wanna grab a brush and start circling right?

Well...that's just what Sarah over at La Maison Boheme did after seeing my post! Check our her new and improved Furbish inspired entry way.

I posted those photos of Furbish on Monday. By Wednesday she had completed this transformation. Talk about wasting no time, I love that! She saw it, she liked it, she did it. A woman after my own heart...sometimes when you think about stuff for too long you can ruin it. It's just paint afterall!

DIY Halloween Front Door Mummy

Continuing on with my inexpensive diy Halloween decor mission, my front door has been magically mummified using good ole fashioned crepe paper streamers. This might just be the easiest and cheapest DIY ever.

Remember these? They made an appearance at every birthday party I attended between the ages of 4 and 14. 4 rolls set me back a whopping $0.68 here.

I cut two circles out of white printer paper and then two slightly smaller ones out of some black contact paper (yup, I still have contact paper left after all this). Black construction paper would work just as well.

Then I proceeded to wrap...and wrap...and wrap. I used double sided tape to keep each strand in place. (TIP: Make sure you mix up the direction of the crepe paper strands and do lots of overlapping.)

I had lots of excess from each strand that extended beyond the door.

I tore all that excess off and taped down the edges with some clear packing tape.

And now my trick-or-treaters will be greeted by a friendly front door mummy. For less than $1.00, I'm pretty happy with how he turned out!

Caitlin Wilson Textiles

I have been a fan of Caitlin Wilson's blog and design work for a couple of years now. I've followed along in wonderment as she and her young family have moved around the globe from London Dubai to Hong Kong to Philadelphia. Somehow, despite where she's located, she manages to churn out gorgeous work and inspiring projects.

Her latest venture is a textile line inspired by her signature look - fun happy colors and bold patterns presented in a very classic and clean way. My favorite thing about her first collection of textiles is just how restrained and curated it is. It makes mixing and matching a breeze.

I love EVERY.SINGLE.THING in this collection but I think my favorite is the Fleur Chinoise.

Not only is the bold pattern gorgeous but the whole thing is printed on metallic linen cotton. See the subtle gold flecks in the fabric? L.O.V.E! I am completely consumed by the idea of creating a sweet little lady's nursery all around this pattern. How amazing would this be as a bumper?

DIY Halloween Contact Paper Silhouettes

I have been busy, busy, busy with my scissors for the last couple of weeks! After planning for and celebrating Knox's birthday, I found myself short on time and funds for decorating the house for Halloween. I couldn't bare the thought of not decorating for my favorite holiday though, so I had to get creative.

Enter my current favorite thing in the craft arsenal - contact paper!!! After buying a roll for its on-the-go black out capabilities I had a ton left (like about 70' worth!) Some scissors and DIY templates are all you need to deck your house out in spooky, cheap and totally disposable decorations. If you can trace, cut and stick you can create anything here plus waaaay more stuff. I've listed all the templates I used at the end of this post. And the best part, once Halloween is over these silhouettes peel right off the drywall, leaving no residue or any sign that they were ever there at all!

I made a huge witch using a template from Martha Stewart that is technically for creating a plywood silhouette for the front yard. I laid out the whole series on 2 widths of contact paper, traced, cut and stick.

I improvised a broom for her. It's a little stumpy but that's ok. Plus I like that she looks like she's about to bash you in the head when you come in from the garage.

She extended right onto the door molding and beyond so I just used an Exacto knife to keep the door functional.

I gave her a little owl friend perched over our laundry room door.

Some creepy black cats grace our entrance and a little colony of bats are taking flight.

My stairs are suffering from a serious rat infestation.

The scary tree was the easiest of all. I didn't have a template so I just improvised it, the crow and bat.

My brother felt the need to point out that my bat looks a bit bottom heavy...like he's been indulging in one too many mini Twix bars.
